AP Class has been helping to enable safe offshore energy production since the earliest days of operations.

We have been providing classification services for the offshore industry’s inaugural floating production system and classed the first floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) since decades earlier. Today, we are still the classification and verification authority for offshore production units.

AP Class is the world’s leader in mobile offshore production unit (MOPU) classification. More than 40% of the FPSOs working around the globe are classed with AP Class. We also provide technical assessments for novel hull concepts and non-ship-shaped MOPUs.

Our position as the leading class society for offshore energy production units has created significant opportunities in Brazil, where presalt discoveries are driving offshore exploration. AP Class classed many of the FPSOs in the Petrobras fleet that will produce from Brazil’s presalt fields, and a large fleet of MOPUs and FPSOs is being built to AP Class class. A testament to the quality of our work, we also were selected to class the country’s first tension-leg platform (TLP).

In US waters, where we work closely with the US Coast Guard (USCG) and Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), AP Class has classed nearly all of the existing floating installations working in the Gulf of Mexico. We remain the only classification society authorized to act on behalf of the USCG to certify floating offshore installation and FPSO design and equipment for the US Outer Continental Shelf.
